Some of them are accessed through a panel on the bottom of laptop (Acer, Samsung), while others slide into a bay on the side similarly to the optical drive (HP, Compac). The most inconvenient composition is when hard disk is buried under several other laptop components and requires a partial system disassembly before you can access it (as is the case with the early iBook). Once you've found it, replacing a hard drive is an easy procedure. For peace of mind, make sure that you have copied the contents of the old drive before proceeding. To ensure that you've got all your data merely coping of documents is never quite enough, so use the free tool CloneZilla to make a full copy of your hard drive. CD and DVD drives are generic as well, with a standard 5.25 inches device fitting into most laptop machines. However, there are some exceptions to this, so before you proceed we recommend checking up if the drive you're purchasing is compatible with your laptop machine. Also the right fittings are required, including the correct runners and faceplate. If you're replacing your old optical drive you should be able to reuse those parts from it; but again, it's best to check first as things could not work out that way. In most cases, replacing the optical drive is not a complicated upgrade if the device fits into a bay in the side of the laptop. It's normally a case of undoing a couple of screws, then sliding out the old part and carefully sliding in the new one. After making sure that the connectors are pushed home the replacement is accomplished. Replacing a CD drive with a DVD-RW one these days is a cheap and worthwhile upgrade to be made; you can find drives for around $50-60. Upgrading your laptop requires a lot of preparation and patience, but in a case you carefully pick the right approach, do adequate research first and proceed with caution, you can add years of the actual lifespan to your laptop assistant.
