That's important when come to upgrades. An official guide answers all sorts of questions, for example what kind of memory you need, if there are a spare USB or PCIe ports in the laptop, whether the optical drive is of a standard size, etc. If you have no access to a full service manual, you can investigate notebook's architecture using free software tools. System Information for Windows is advisable; it is a freeware program that investigates your notebook and digs out valuable hardware and software information. The program provides you with information on drives that have been installed, types of the interfaces, RAM features information and more. You can even recover your software licenses and passwords, thus your pre-upgrade back-up routine will stay unaffected. Similar to System Information for Windows is PC Wizard 2008 program, and it is also free. In comparison with System Information for Windows it has no software information, but still it provides sufficient data to attempt upgrades. It includes a convenient benchmarking tool, so after upgrading you can measure improvements in notebook performance. Some guides advise BIOS update before upgrading. We think it's essential in two specific circumstances: if a notebook has a BIOS related problems and diagnostic test proves it; or if you want to install notebook components that current BIOS won't support. Make note that flashing BIOS is a procedure that can transmute your notebook PC into an unbootable brick if done badly. It's also more complicated to carry out this procedure on notebooks than on desktop PCs, because notebooks lack a floppy drive. One way around this is to boot into Windows using an old install disc and then access the BIOS upgrade from a CD-RW (available from your motherboard manufacturer). Alternatively, and more safely, try www.bootdisk.com. There you can find DOS and Windows boot discs, including 'Flash CD' with BIOS upgrade instructions.
