A basic set of electrical screwdrivers should be all right, although in some cases to loosen tightly fitted screws one has to resort to a powered screwdriver. Some laptops – for example Dell and Apple laptops – have Torx screws to deal with; they have a star-shaped slot at the top. It might worth investing in a set of such screwdrivers. They include small hex socket screws too. In rare instances one may need a soldering iron, but only in cases one is skillful in repairing such damages. One can get all the tools in a local DIY shop or online. These are standard tools, but we've found that some other bits and pieces could be useful too. A telescopic magnetic pick-up tool can come in handy for grabbing small screws that have fallen down cracks. A pair of pincers or tweezers can be helpful in removing motherboard connectors or small ribbon cables. Many laptop cases fasten together with plastic clips. Use a plastic putty spreader to get between gaps; it is strong enough to give some leverage to open the case without causing scratch damage to the exterior case. One needs something like this only in a case he plans on fully disassembling the laptop. It is a fact that no laptop model is the same as another. It is normal when notebooks in the same family are broadly similar, but it's never guaranteed that all the screws are situated in the same place, or that a hard drive slots into a handy bay on the side. Sometimes to access the hard drive one has to remove keyboard or take off the back. Before start renovation one should flip over the machine and take a good look at the ports and bays on the back and sides. If it's not totally clear how to easily access a component, one should read the manual first. Some laptop producers, including Dell and HP, provide service manuals online. Websites dedicated to 'take-apart' guides consisted documents created by enthusiasts that explain disassembly procedures are also very helpful.
